Description of the problem.

The HIV/AIDS problem is one of the most vital questions in Ukraine. The statistics of the people who are ill or died from AIDS is an evidence of the rapid development of theepidemic in our country. According to the data of the Ukrainian center of prophylaxis and fight with AIDS 57,14 thousand HIV carriers(5 233 of them are children) were officialy registered in Ukraine. Since that time 4,96 thousand adults and170 children have fallen ill with AIDS and 2,8 thousand adults and 95 children have died. Moreover the worst is that 80% of the sick are people up to 30 years.
According to the data of the UNAIDS number of HIV-infected people is 500 thousand people. Since 1997 to 2001 the transfer of infection by sexual route increased from 11,3% to 27%. This is the result of propaganda by mass media of antifamily values, sexual profligacy and erroneous statements about the guarantee of avoiding of HIV/AIDS with the help of contraceptives.but nature don’t let profligacy.
According to the data of the Red Cross mission in Ukraine each the fortieth inhabitant of Ukraine from 14 to 22 years old is HIV-infected. The HIV-infected Ukrainians can live 5-7 years since the time they were infected.
The most problems with HIV and AIDS in Ukraine people have in the regions of Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Mykolaiv and in the Crimea.
According to the Interfax-Ukraine about half of Ukrainians don’t know that HIV and AIDS can threaten people’s life.
This is affirmed by the data the of global poll which was held by the world service BBC in 15 countries of the world within the programmes about HIV/AIDS. They are broadcasted in 43 languages by radio and in the Internet. Ukrainians and Russians don’t mention AIDS among the problems which they are particularly disturbed by. The first and the most important problem for them is their private financial well-being and other problems with their health. In Ukraine only 56% those people who were asked know that AIDS is a deadly disease, 34% think that it doesn’t threaten people’s lifes and 10% couldn’t answer this question. All displays of discrimination of the people who have HIV/AIDS are connected with lack of information.
Information concerning HIV/AIDS prophylaxis especialy among young people is insufficent. It is difficult to make attempts to attract attention to the HIV/AIDS prophylaxis in schools because there is no specialy prepared teachers, lack of textbooks, educational-methodical material and insufficent coordination between education and public health. Besides young people who live in villages and those who live in remote regional centers almost don’t get any prophylactic. Especially threatening is an epidemic situation among homeless anduncared-for children “children of the street”. According only to the official data their number makes no less than 40 thousand people and constantly increase every year. Most of them have disorderly sexual life and know almost nothing about danger of HIV. That’s why if we don’t take any drastic measures the number of HIV-infected people in Ukraine can rise up to 1,5 million people by 2010. Spreading of infection and disease has become an epidemic since 1995. Now it is characterized by such three waves:
The first is impetuous spreading of HIV among users of drug injections.
The second was formed by those who were infected by sexual route first of all from the contacts with drug addicts. The third is a result of the first and the second waves and spreads among the children who were born by HIV-infected mothers. That’s why necessity in prophylactic enlightment, medical and psychological assistance and social supporting grows with the development of epidemic. A church can become a representative of those people who live with AIDS and make together with them steps against discrimination and social injustice and can make considerable contribution in preventive measures. But it’s a pity that the workers of the church and parishioners are not well-informed about this problem. Due to the lack of materials about HIV/AIDS in churches and religious foundations the priests who are not enough informed about this problem don’t mention it in their sermons during meetings with children, young people and adults.
